Elements

Ottawa improvising percussionist Jesse Stewart will bring his ensemble to the festival "exploring the elements as defined by Chinese tradition, using instruments made of metal, water, wood, fire, and earth". Jesse has used these elements separately in previous performances in Ottawa, but not combined in one performance.

Jesse writes: "All of the instruments (most of which I either found or built) are made of, or relate to, one of these materials. We’ll be making music on metal cylinders, saw blades and pans; water-filled seashells; Douglas fir bass marimba bars; tuned fire tubes activated by blow torches; a microtonal lithophone that I built out of polished marble; and more. This is a project that I have had in mind for a very long time and I am pleased with the way things have come together."
