Alto saxophonist Cory Weeds assumes nearly every role on the Vancouver jazz scene - musician, record producer, radio host, agent, record label owner and jazz club owner. Over the past nine years, his club, the Cellar, has showcased the best in Canadian and international talent – but Weeds is most proud of providing a place for local musicians to play. His talents as a producer were recognized with a nomination for Producer of the Year in 2002, 2003, and 2004 at the National Jazz Awards, and in 2008 his record label, Cellar Live, was named label of the year.
Weeds has been involved with a number of Vancouver bands, including People Playing Music, Crash, and his current project, a quintet featuring New York trumpeter Jim Rotondi. Rotondi has recorded and toured internationally with the Ray Charles Orchestra, as well as performing for a six-year tenure with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. He currently tours with his own group, as well as with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Grammy-winner Toshiko Akiyoshi and the collective known as One For All.
The quintet's first CD, Everything’s Coming Up Weeds, was released last June to rave reviews and has since reached number 6 on the JazzWeek Charts.
Ottawa Jazz Scene interviewed Cory Weeds about the show.
