Peripheral Vision Quartet at Café Paradiso

Friday, October 23 - 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 24 - 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
$5 entertainment fee for non-diners.

  • Don Scott – guitar
  • Michael Herring – bass
  • Trevor Hogg – sax
  • Nick Fraser - drums

Michael Herring’s Vertigo and Don Scott’s Out of Line have joined forces to form Peripheral Vision, a quartet showcasing their recent discography and both leaders’ modern jazz compositions. Toronto-based Herring and Scott have spent time living in New York in recent years and now continue to bring the energy and fire of New York's innovative jazz scene back to a Canadian audience.

They are joined by Toronto saxophone greatTrevor Hogg. On drums, from both Vertigo and Out of Line, is Nick Fraser. "Fraser not so much plays the drums as hurls himself whole body and soul against skin and metal... truly talented." (Bill Stunt, CBC Radio). This amalgamated Canadian super-group is promoting their new CD (release date: fall 2009).

Herring and Scott have been long-time collaborators. This project is a synergy between their strong musical personalities and their complimentary writing styles. “Unusual instrumental colours, carefully composed rhythmic structures and catchy-but-offbeat melodies” (J.D. Considine, The Globe & Mail) characterize the music they are each bringing to this ambitious new project.

Herring’s album Coniferous Revenge was named one of All About Jazz New York’s Top 5 debut albums of 2006. Scott’s debut album, Out Of Line, was praised by John Kelman in All About Jazz: “Balancing the cerebral with the visceral... Out Of Line speaks with a voice distinctive enough to make it a recommended debut from a guitarist from whom more, no doubt, will be heard.”

The Kandinsky Effect, formed in 2007, is a modern jazz ensemble; both powerful and sensitive within its own unique sound. The group is constantly searching for new ways to improvise within the jazz idiom. It can be found lurking along the borders of jazz, rock, electronica, hip-hop, and experimental sounds in its quest for freedom of expression. Tenor saxophone, electronics, double bass, analogue synths and drums play subtly with sounds, colors, rhythms, and forms to create a rich and original musical world which mixes personal compositions with covers from their individual influences.
