Alcorn Music Studios and Elise Letourneau are proud to present the inaugural Singers' Bootcamp from July 7-12, 2013. We are encouraging singers (high school through adult) to join us for an intense course designed to improve your abilities as a musician and vocalist.

Firmly rooted in the fundamentals of clean vocal technique, and with an emphasis on musicianship, this course is designed to offer participants knowledge, focus and discipline. Our goal is to provide an environment where singers are well-supported and feel free to get involved, ask questions, and grow. Singers will spend time working on repertoire, harmony singing, and exploring genres; as well as theory, ear training, and sight reading. Students will also have the opportunity to sing with a band.

Some singing experience is helpful. You will be placed in a smaller singing group the first day of camp, according to your music and training background.

This camp has limited enrolment. Admission is on a first come, first served basis. Confirmation of enrolment will be issued when full payment is received. Registration fee is non-refundable. Please make cheques payable to Alcorn Music Studios. Call 613-729-0696 to register.

Ultimate Jazz Combo Workout at the Shenkman Arts Centre

Last updated March 7, 2013

Saturday, March 23, 2013 - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: $95 (JazzWorks members); $125 (non-members)

Looking for a hands-on musical challenge? Attend the JazzWorks Ultimate Jazz Combo Workout!

Building on twenty years of successful summer camp workshops, JazzWorks is pleased to announce the March launch of its first Ultimate Jazz Combo Workout, organized by our Artistic Director John Geggie.

This intensive one-day event focuses on playing pre-selected well-known tunes in different styles, keys, feels, group combinations and tempos– the ultimate combo workout for all musicians. There will be a limit of 40 participants, to be divided into two sections, each with the capacity for up to two complete rhythm sections, at least half a dozen instrumentalists and as many as four vocalists. Different combinations within each section will be coached by two faculty members who will offer advice, direction and immediate feedback on such topics as improvisation, ensemble playing, stylistic considerations and group interaction.

Faculty: Joining longtime JazzWorks faculty member Nancy Walker (piano) is Ottawa's most respected and busiest jazz musician, Roddy Ellias (guitar) and JazzWorks newcomer, vocalist and composer Sienna Dahlen from Toronto.

Update March 7: Montreal saxophonist, composer, and arranger Christine Jensen will also be a faculty member, replacing Frank Lozano. Jensen won the Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year in 2011 for her album, Treelines.

All instrumentalists will be required to bring their own instruments and gear; a PA will be provided for the vocalists in each combo. The lists of required repertoire and accompanying instructions will be made available upon registration, to ensure all participants are prepared in advance.

Refreshments will be provided mid morning and mid afternoon. Bring your own lunch
