Extra-jazz Affairs

Enjoyable music (we won't attempt to qualify what's 'good' is!)  knows no boundaries. And being skilled and versatile, area jazz musicians and improvisers can also be heard playing a variety of this other music: funk, blues, classical, chamber music, folk, pop, R&B and more. And during the past two years, area jazz fans have heard some interesting jazz that had one foot solidly planted in another genre.

OttawaJazzScene.ca is pleased to list some of these other musical events ("extra-jazz affairs")  by area jazz musicians. The event must be of interest to OJS readers, and performers must be active in the Ottawa-Gatineau jazz scene, in the editors' sole judgement.

Flotilla with Adam Saikaley + David Little G at the Raw Sugar Cafe

Friday, July 30 - 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Cover: $6

Montreal’s Flotilla makes for an unusual, genre-defying indie-rock outfit, with a classical harpist, an avant-garde composer, and a jazz-trained singer-songwriter on the roster. Ottawa's own Adam Saikaley’s artistry knows no bounds, and will leave you rapt with his blend of organic electro-psych-pop. A boy-wonder and wonderful multi-instrumentalist.

David Little G began early 2007 as a solo project and have morphed into some very warm, melodic, and catchy sounds created by local jazz drummer Jeff Asselin, Igor Ivanov, Karyne Belanger, and Jeff Gleeson.

The Yohawks at Bluesfest

  • Keith Richardson - guitar
  • Ian Clyne - keyboards

The story of The Yohawks dates back to the days of the British Invasion, just before the Summer of Love, and long before commercial radio became formatted for specific music genres and listener demographics.

As part of the Five D, an Ottawa band which enjoyed success throughout Eastern Ontario in the late nineteen sixties,  Poulin, Bradfield, Campbell, and Richardson formed a lasting friendship that, forty-two years later resulted in their first album of fresh, original R’nB.

The name Yohawks has a special meaning and a history in Ottawa. In the late sixties, a Yohawk was a person who dressed with a certain style; sneakers, desert boots or penny loafers, with a plaid, madras or paisley shirt and tight fitting faded jeans. On the other side were The Squirrels, with their jet boots, greasy hair and jean jackets. Yohawks and Squirrels were Ottawa’s version of Mods and Rockers, and were the first recorded gangs in the city.

Today, The Yohawks are a nine piece R’nB band, and are busy working on the follow-up to their first album, MPH.
