Jazz makes Christmas music so much better. A bit of swing will brighten your mood and make you more able to enjoy (or at least cope with) the season.
There's a wide range of Christmas-themed shows you can enjoy this year
- Tonight, crooner Matt Dusk teams up with Latin-influenced jazz vocalist Florence K and the NAC Orchestra for his Christmas show in the National Arts Centre's Southam Hall.
- On Saturday, Karen Oxorn features many seasonal songs along with her favourite jazz standards in a show with pianist J.P. Allain at Zolas.
- Also on Saturday, GigSpace presents its third annual Jazzin' the Holidays fundraiser, this year with pianist Brian Browne. A popular event, it's already marked as sold out - but you can still watch our video story about last year's Jazzin' the Holidays.
- On Sunday, Bernard Stepien is presenting the 8th annual edition of his A Very Ayler Christmas, which mashes together Christmas carols with the gospel-influenced free jazz of Albert Ayler. It's at IMOO at the Raw Sugar Cafe. Watch our video story and interview with Bernard Stepien about this annual performance.
And there are many other shows at clubs from now until the end of Tuesday, many of which (we suspect) will include a Christmas tune or three, given a jazz treatment that will remove them from cliche and turn them into seasonal comfort. Enjoy!
