Richard Page has returned to Avant-Garde Bar every Tuesday night, to deliver some hard-hitting sax-based tunes. His newest group, with Alex Moxon on guitar, JP Lapensee on electric bass, and Jamie Holmes on drums and cymbals, has been paying homage to some of Sonny Rollins' work recently. As regular listeners know, you'll hear plenty of new and original material by Richard. And while Richard doesn't have a new sax this month, he does have a new mouthpiece, and the combo sounds great.

Pierre-Yves Martel anticipated at IMOO

Pierre-Yves Martel on his viola da gamba at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. ©Brett Delmage, 2007Expect to hear instruments more normally heard in chamber music, as Sainct Laurens visits IMOO this Sunday. Philippe Lauzier will play bass clarinet, while Pierre-Yves Martel will play the seven-stringed viola da gamba. And apparently there will be feedback too: from the musicians, in addition to the usual audience reactions.

In the first set, IMOO will also welcome its first touring musician from Europe: Kim Myhr from Oslo, on guitar, zithers, and objects.

Lucas Haneman and Sean Duhaime: a young collaboration

Lucan Haneman with Sean Duhaime at Café Nostalgica, Dec. 2010 ©Brett Delmage, 2010Lucas Haneman and Sean Duhaime played together for the first time at Tim Bedner's Inside the Music workshop in October 2010, when clinician and master guitarist Vic Juris asked for volunteers to play. The participants, almost all guitarists, were pleasantly surprised by what they heard. Even Vic Juris expressed some surprise that the two had not played together before.

Now Lucas and Sean are playing together for a full evening (Saturday, February 5 - 8 p.m. to midnight at the Avant-Garde Bar). While the line-up might not appeal to jazz purists, it's likely to be full of the same good vibes and music-making communication that workshop participants enjoyed earlier.

Jesse Stewart to play Winterlude again tonight

Jesse Stewart will perform his World premiere of Dynergetics for fire, ice, gongs, and drums tonight, Feb 4, as part of the 2011 Winterlude opening ceremonies. Last year, his ensemble played custom ice instruments at the Winterlude opening. They resonated beautifully at -25C.

We froze, so you can watch the videos (below) of that opening performance on Feb 5, 2010, and a repeat performance on Feb. 7 in Confederation Park from the comfort of your computer chair.

Tonight's temperatures are forecast to be a pleasant -10C. Unless you are at one of the other live performances tonight, you have no excuse not to enjoy this one live.
