A Large View from a Small Window will be an evening of original "chamber jazz", featuring compositions by Ottawa jazz musician Richard Page, and including a jazz trio and a 16-piece string ensemble.
Some of history’s greatest jazz artists, including Charlie Parker, Mike Murley and Joe Lovano, have written for and performed with strings. It is the fullness of the strings sound that appeals to Page. “Few things beat a good choir or a string section for me,” he says, “If I could play strings all day every day I would.” The flute will provide yet another musical colour, interacting with the saxophone like a character.
Jazz is often perceived in a limited way, as angry or inaccessible, but Page disagrees with this stereotype. “It’s huge!” Page says, “Jazz is so chameleon-like – there’s something for everyone.” Drawing elements from the waltz, the fugue and even country music, Page thinks that A Large View will prove this. “Audience members will come out of the show with a much bigger picture,” he promises.
All of the tunes from A Large View have been inspired by Page’s experiences in Ottawa. For example, there is a tune in the show for each of the romantic relationships he has had here. Ottawa has surpassed Page's initial expectations: he was only expecting to stay for the summer, working not as a musician, but as a plumber. “Now I’m living my dream in a city where I never thought I could… [This show] is about rediscovering myself and gaining a new perspective.”
