Sunday, February 5, 2012 - 4:30 p.m. (doors open at 4 p.m.)
Free will offering at the door

Featuring: Tim Bedner (guitar) and Elise Letourneau (vocals/piano/flute)

Jazz Vespers is a very present form of a very ancient tradition. From the earliest days of the Christian church, there has been some sort of reverence made to mark the end of the day.At All Saints/First United, Vespers is a time when people can gather to chase away the shadows of the coming night or the day that's been; seek comfort and sustenance; renew energy for the coming days; or find peace for an hour or so from an all too present world.Come and be moved, comforted, uplifted, outraged, or whatever else you need. And come and hear how these musicians interpret the centuries.

The first Sunday of every month, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit of All Saints’ Anglican Church rings with the improvisations of local jazz musicians in the context of a service that includes some candle lighting, prayers, reading and a short reflection.

Jim Sandlilands, Rector of St. James in Dundas, Ontario who plays bass and has also organized Jazz Vespers in Niagara-on-the-Lake, says the music has a strong connection to his own spirituality: “Life brings surprises and one has to learn how to be flexible and creative.”  In fact there is an extensive discography of sacred jazz that would include Duke Ellington’s sacred concerts, Dave Brubeck’s Light in the Wilderness and Joe William’s Feel the Spirit.
