Jazz singing: Where to start?
with jazz vocalist Nicole Ratté

You would like to have a general idea of what you need to know to sing jazz? This three-hour workshop is for you!

Every vocalist can sing a jazz standard. But having an understanding of how it works is another story. Musicians expect vocalists to be able to communicate what they want and speak the same language.

We will demystify a lot of jazz expressions, learn what is the structure of a jazz standard, what kind of intros and endings are best for a medium swing or a ballad or a Latin feel, how to count a tune according to the style, etc.  We will do some listening and some singing too!

This workshop is for:

  • Beginners or intermediate jazz singers who want to clarify some notions
  • Jazz camp participants or people who want to prepare for jazz camp
  • Experienced singers who want an introduction to jazz
  • Non-singers who want to know more about it to have a better listening experience.

Nicole Ratté has been teaching jazz workshops since 2004 and has prepared participants to jazz camp and jam sessions since then. More details about her at
