Each week OttawaJazzScene.ca recommends a live jazz or improvised music performance in Ottawa-Gatineau from our comprehensive Jazz Bulletins. There's a lot of wonderful jazz being presented, so it's often a difficult choice!
Wednesday, December 6, 2017: The Miguel de Armas Trio with special guests Amado Dedeu-Garcia, Lucas Haneman, and Petr Cancura at the NAC Fourth Stage
It’s going to be a lot of heat in an intimate space!
Following a series of high-profile, repeatedly sold-out concerts including at the Ottawa and Merrickville Jazz Festivals, Afro-Cuban master pianist Miguel Angel de Armas brings his tight latin jazz ensemble of percussion, electric bass, and piano back to the NAC Fourth Stage after four years. It’s a rare performance by a local jazz musician in the NAC Presents series. They'll will play tunes from their new album "What's To Come" released in Toronto November 1.
de Armas had an impressive musical background in Cuba, recording dozens of albums, and collaborating with Cuban legends. He brought his energy to Ottawa when he moved here, playing with a huge expanse of local jazz musicians with a variety of musical backgrounds in his own series; presenting his own special shows, and composing original music. He’s brought ‘global warming’ to Ottawa in a good way with his original, Cuban, and Canadian jazz.
The group will be joined by Amado-Dedeu Garcia on batás (Afro Cuban percussion) and vocals, Lucas Haneman on guitar and Petr Cancura on saxophone, to augment the Latin rhythms.
You may want to sit near the bar, where there’s room for you get up and dance if you just can’t stay in your seat - and be conveniently cooled down again afterwards with a beverage.
Miguel de Armas with special guests Amado Dedeu-Garcia, Lucas Haneman, and Petr Cancura performs at at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage (1 Elgin Street) on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. See here to purchase tickets and for more information. All OC Transpo Transitway routes and Routes 5 and 14 stop nearby. New, covered bicycle parking is located at the back of the NAC (canal side) by the Studio.
