Each week, OttawaJazzScene.ca recommends a live jazz or improvised music performance in Ottawa-Gatineau from our comprehensive Jazz Bulletins. There's a lot of wonderful jazz being presented, so it's often a difficult choice.

Friday, October 12, 2018: The Diane Nalini Trio at GigSpace

Diane Nalini is best known in Ottawa as the resident vocalist with the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra, but she also performs in much smaller ensembles. For this show she's collaborating with two acclaimed Ottawa musicians accustomed to playing in vocal trios – pianist Mark Ferguson and double bassist John Geggie – in the intimate listening hall at GigSpace.

She promises jazz adaptations of songs from across the Americas in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, plus recently-written original songs which she'll be recording for her next project.

Nalini has released four CDs over the past decade, and performed at festivals around the world. She won second prize in the UK's Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year awards in 2001, and was one of two finalists for the Grand prix de jazz at the 2002 Montreal International Jazz Festival. She has given gala performances for President Bill Clinton and Sir Paul McCartney.

Born in Montreal of Belgian and Goan descent, she started singing jazz at the age of three and never stopped. "I just love Diane Nalini's voice. This is a sassy, 'ripe plum in the Italian sun' kind of voice," says former CBC Radio host Katie Malloch. Her original songs have also been featured in television, independent films, as well as the Hollywood movie Charlotte Grey starring Cate Blanchett, which featured her song “L’amour d’autrefois”, co-written with UK arranger/composer Dick Walter.

She also has a strong scientific background. She is a Rhodes Scholar, with post-doctoral studies at Oxford, "a physicist and someone who knows a thing or two about nuclear microscopy, astrophysics and the environment". She has been heard coast-to-coast on national radio, including several feature interviews on CBC's The Sunday Edition as well as Radio Canada's Quand le jazz est là.

The Diane Nalini Trio (Nalini on vocals, Mark Ferguson on vocals, and John Geggie on double bass) will perform on Friday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m. at GigSpace. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25, available on-line on the GigSpace website, by credit card by calling 613-729-0693, or at the door for cash (but be warned that GigSpace only has 46 seats and does sell out). GigSpace is located within in Alcorn Music Studios at 953 Gladstone Avenue, one long block west of Preston Avenue. OC Transpo route 14 stops near GigSpace; route 85 runs down Preston Avenue nearby.
