Friday, May 17: Nick Adema Group "Starting Point" EP Release at Irene's Pub

Read our interview with Nick Adema about this show and his new EP

Ottawa trombonist Nick Adema is known for making his own opportunities. While still in high school, he was already organizing shows, including a large-scale tribute to Canadian trombonists as a graduation project. He played in both the Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Nepean All-City Jazz Band, bands with high standards, gaining a strong appreciation of the jazz tradition and Canadian jazz.

For the past two years, he's been studying jazz performance at the University of Toronto; he was last seen in Ottawa in March, playing in the trombone section for the second anniversary of Ed Lister's Prime Rib Big Band.

On Friday, he's back, this time to unveil his debut EP, Starting Point. Adema describes the EP as pushing "the boundaries of straight-ahead, contemporary jazz". He recorded it in February in Toronto, with saxophonist David Hodgson, pianist Carter Brodkorb, bassist Evan Gratham, and drummer Jacob Slous, all but one  of whom will be at the Ottawa show. We listened to the EP: its four pieces, all composed by him, range from quiet, thoughtful passages to more intense collaborations, but throughout carefully showcase all the musicians' voices in multi-layered patterns.

Also on the bill is the Zakari Frantz Trio, with Ottawa jazz stalwarts Frantz on alto sax, Keith Hartshorn-Walton on bass and Mike Essoudry on drums. Frantz, who is best known for his work with the groove collective (and two-time JUNO nominees) The Souljazz Orchestra, also coordinated the Jazz Mondays jams for many years and plays in the Bank Street Bonbons and the Prime Rib Big Band. This will be a rare chance to hear him leading his own mainstream jazz group.

The Nick Adema Group (trombonist Nick Adema, saxophonist David Hodgson, pianist Carter Brodkorb, bassist Evan Gratham, and drummer Evan Ng sitting in for Jacob Slous), will release its first EP,  Starting Point, at Irene's Pub on Friday, May 17, from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. The Zakari Frantz Trio will also perform. Seating is limited so arrive early for the best seats. Cover is $10, payable at the door.

Irene's Pub is at 885 Bank Street, just south of 5th Avenue in the Glebe. OC Transpo routes 6 and 7 serve it. Try the OC Transpo Trip Planner to find your trip to this show!
