8 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2019: Togetherness! at IMOO Fest 2019, at GigSpace
Our jazz pick this week is one of the bands being presented at IMOO Fest 2019. They will be playing in a three-group showcase on Saturday at GigSpace.
Togetherness! brings to the stage music from South Africa and beyond, described as "joyful, adventurous, swinging". Their music speaks to fans of swinging jazz, danceable grooves, and the avant-garde - all essential elements within the tradition of South African jazz music. Featuring a three piece horn section with long-time friends Scott Thomson (trombone) and Ellwod Epps (trumpet), both known to Ottawa listeners for excellent performances, they are joined by fellow Montrealers Aurélien Tomasi (alto sax), Stephane Diamantakiou (bass), and Ivan Bamford (drums).
Their music leaves space for the changing harmonies and textures of the front line to be fully heard, contemplated, and enjoyed. Stephane Diamantakiou and Ivan Bamford have much to contribute in rhythm and complementary low end sounds and solos.
Living up to their group's name, they've played twenty performances, affording them the familiarity with each other that allows adventurous improvisation and a spot in IMOO Fest. We heard several of the tunes on the group's debut CD, which ranged from gut bucket blues to an upbeat, almost trad jazz, dancing number. The album includes both originals by Epps and pieces by Abdullah Ibrahim, William Parker, Roswell Rudd, Mongezi Feza, and Dudu Pukwana.
