34 sets of tickets to some of the best jazz concerts were won by lucky OttawaJazzScene.ca newsletter subscribers in 2012 – that's one giveaway every 11 days, on average.
Our ticket winners heard a wide variety of jazz, including music from our most talented local musicians, Juno award winners like Sonia Johnson and Jesse Stewart, and international stars like John Pizzarelli. See the past draw winners and prizes.
What really made running the draws satisfying for us was hearing from listeners how happy they were to be introduced to new musicians and venues that they didn't know about and might not have otherwise discovered. After hearing his first concert at BDT, one listener wrote “I want to thank you for the tickets. What a great place! Wonderful beer and music. I am already planning on going there again.”
Another winner emailed us: “It was a fantastic concert! Sonia was amazing and she had a great band with her... I had never heard of her, so we would not have gone without those free tickets.” (Read our interview with 2012 Juno award winner Sonia Johnson.)
It requires a significant amount of effort to run the draws so we were very happy to know that they helped connect enthusiastic listeners, musicians and venues that present jazz.
Our greatest thanks are due to our draw partners: the venues and artists, who generously donated tickets to make this possible. In 2012 these included (in order of first donation):
- National Arts Centre – multiple donations – special thanks to Jennifer Covert
- GigSpace – multiple donations
- Centrepointe Theatre – multiple donations
- Renée Yoxon and J.P. Allain
- La Grange – multiple donations
- Carleton University Jazz Camp – multiple donations
- BDT – Brasseur du Temps – multiple donations
- Ottawa Jazz Orchestra
- Renée Yoxon and Mark Ferguson
We are most grateful to the participants who actually followed our simple entry rules, were easy to notify about winning, and gave us their valuable feedback after the concert.
We already have tickets to give away to highly anticipated concerts in 2013. These include the popular Geggie Series concerts, NAC Presents concerts with top Canadian jazz musicians, and more. Watch OttawaJazzScene.ca and subscribe to and read the JazzScene newsletter for the draw announcements.

Some Ottawa-Gatineau jazz musicians also felt lucky in 2013, after successful crowdfunding campaigns raised the needed money for their musical project. See who they were and what their projects were.
