Caridad Cruz

Caridad Cruz Vilain was born in Havana, Cuba, into a musical family deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban culture. Caridad studied music for three years at Havana’s Escuela Superación Técnico Profesional Ignacio Cervantes under the tutelage of Argelia Fragoso, while at the same time taking private vocal training from Margarita Orutinier. In 2006, Caridad toured New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut, accompanied by some of New York’s leading Latin jazz players, like bassist Ruben Rodriguez and conguero Chembo Corniel. In Montreal, backed by the powerful 9-piece salsa band Ritmo Caribeño, she sang a Celia Cruz retrospective, which was repeated in the 2006 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. In 2007, Caridad exploded onto the Ottawa scene, with appearances in the National Arts Centre’s Quebec Scene festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Ottawa Bluesfest. “Havana native Caridad Cruz packs a powerful punch,” read the Ottawa Citizen headline.

Née à Cuba, d’une famille de musiciens réputés Caridad Cruz Vilain est ancrée dans la mouvance afro-cubaine. Sa formation de musicienne et de chanteuse s’est faite avec les plus grands de Cuba. Caridad a joué aux États-Unis et est passée par le Festival international de Jazz de Montréal. En 2007 elle a fait son apparition sur les scènes d’Ottawa dans plusieurs festivals, elle en est maintenant une habituée. On dit d’elle qu’elle a du punch!

Miguel Angel de Armas

Master pianist/composer Miguel Angel de Armas was born in Havana, Cuba. At the early age of nine, he started his musical studies at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan and later graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte with a Bachelor in Cuban Percussion. In 1988, he founded together with prestigious Cuban musicians, coming most of them from Irakere, the legendary NG La Banda Orchestra. For over a decade he toured and performed in over 30 countries including the most important jazz festivals and cultural events of the world, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreaux Jazz Festival, Nice Jazz Festival, Nantes Jazz Festival, Normandia Jazz Festival, Color Café Festival, Río de Janeiro Film Festival, and many others. During his musical career, he has recorded over 50 albums, some of them for outstanding record labels and collaborated with Cuban artists like Chucho Valdes e Irakere, Los Van Van, Pablo Milanés, Compay Segundo, Orquesta La Revé, Orlando Valle Maraca, Robertico Carcassés, just to mention some of them.

He has performed at famous scenes as the Lincoln Centre in New York, sharing stage with figures like Michel Camilo, Randy Brecker, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul and The Zawinul Syndicate, McCoy Tyner, Earth Wind and Fire, Take 6, Dominic Miller, David Murray, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Willy Colón, Oscar de León, Frankie Ruiz, Héctor Lavoe, Roberto Roena, José Cheo Feliciano, Luis García, Andy Montañez, Tommy Olivencia, Papo Lucca, Diky Gaytán, Afro-Cuba All Stars, Danilo Pérez, David Sánchez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Daniel Valentin, George Benson, Wynton Marsalis, Ivan Lins, Clark Terry, Tania Maria, Chico Freeman, Dave Valentin, Sammy Figueroa, Robbie Ammen, Gilberto Gil, Hermeto Pascoal, and others.

Caridad sera accompagnée dun autre Havanais, Miguel de Armas, musicien brillant et inventif qui jouit d’une belle renommée à Cuba. Membre fondateur du célèbre groupe NG La Banda, Miguel a gravé plus de 50 albums et collaboré avec des grands noms de la musique cubaine comme Chucho Valdés, Los Van Van, Pablo Milanés et Compay Segundo.
